ABOUT

Mireille Dijks was born and raised in the Netherlands and moved to Canada in 2006. Today, she maintains a transatlantic artistic practice, spanning both the Netherlands and the west coast of Canada, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, cultural perspectives, and personal experiences of both worlds.
Working primarily with painting and mixed media, Dijks explores the relationship between color, light, texture, and form. Influenced by minimalism and geometric abstraction, she creates atmospheric compositions that balance structure with spontaneity, precision with fluidity, and order with a sense of estrangement. Through layered surfaces, nuanced planes of color, and refined linear elements, her work evokes a feeling of familiarity, while subtle disruptions simultaneously challenge the viewer’s expectations.

Her practice is shaped by an ongoing dialogue between place, memory, and change. She investigates the tension between the familiar and the unknown, precision and openness, stillness and movement. Rather than telling fixed narratives, she allows color, texture, and form to evoke a contemplative atmosphere, leaving room for personal interpretation.

In addition to her painting, Dijks explores the possibilities of moving image and sound. In this work, she examines how movement, rhythm, light, and music can alter the perception of abstract forms and deepen their emotional impact. The interplay between visual stillness and subtle disruption, between recognition and estrangement, aligns with her broader interest in the relationship between form, space, and perception. Although this exploration unfolds within a different medium, it remains rooted in the same artistic sensibility that characterizes her painting. By balancing structure and openness, Dijks creates space for an experience in which meaning emerges from the interplay between form, perception, and personal association.
